Die Bletterbachschlucht im Südtiroler Geopark gewährt Einblick in das Innere der Berge, in die Welt der Steine. Der Canyon ist das Ergebnis von Verwitterung und Abtragung. Seit der Eiszeit, vor etwa 15.000 Jahren, hat sich der Bletterbach auf einer Strecke von etwa 8 Kilometern bis zu 400 m tief in unterschiedliche Erdzeitalter eingegraben. Schicht um Schicht wurde freigelegt. 10 Milliarden Tonnen Gestein wurden abgetragen und ins Etschtal verfrachtet. In diesen Schichten kann nun geblättert werden wie in einem Buch. Im Gegensatz zu den verworrenen Verhältnissen in anderen Gebieten der Alpen sind die Schichten im Canyon der Bletterbachschlucht unversehrt. Der Aufbau der Gesteine gibt Hinweis auf die Entstehung, das Klima und die Umweltbedingungen vor etwa 250 Millionen Jahren. Zudem wurden Saurierspuren in den Schichten des Grödner Sandsteins gefunden. Gut erhaltene Abdrücke von Pflanzenteilen und zahlreiche Fraß- und Wühlspuren geben Aufschluss über die Pflanzenwelt und das Bodenleben der damaligen Zeit. Fossilien in den Meeresablagerungen wie z. B. Muscheln, Schnecken und Kopffüßler, berichten vom Leben in den warmen tropischen Meeren. Hinweistafeln an interessanten Punkten informieren den Besucher über die Gesteinsschichten und die vielen wertvollen Funde - verkohlte Pflanzen und Gehölze. Er führt zu einem alten Vulkanschlot. Dort findet Ihr die Informationen, die notwendig sind, um diesen EarthCache zu loggen.

Die angegebenen Koordinaten sind die einer Stelle, die sich "Einbruch des Meeres" nennt. Bis hier habt Ihr den spektakulärsten Teil der Schlucht gesehen. Von hier aus kann man entweder zum Besucherzentrum zurückkehren oder die Tour bis zum Ende der schlucht, der sogenannten "Gorz" verlängern. Dies ist sehr empfehlenswert, aber nicht notwendig, um diesen Cache zu loggen.

The Bletterbach offers a view into the interior of the mountains, into the world of stones. The gorge is the result of weathering and erosion, Over a section of about 8 kilometres the Bletterbach has been carving its way since the Ice Age, about 15,000 years ago, up to 400 m. deep, into the different eras in the history of the earth. Layer upon layer has been exposed. Ten billion tonnes of rock were removed and carried down into the Etsch Valley. Now we can leaf through it as if it were a book. The walk through the gorge, and around the Bletterbach geological park, is a special experience which takes you on a journey through millions of years of geological history. In contrast to the complicated and confusing situation in other parts of the Alps, the strata here are intact, and the structure of the rocks gives an insight into their creation, the climate, and the environment 250 million years ago. In addition the tracks of prehistoric reptiles have been found in the Gröden sandstone strata. Well-preserved impressions of parts of plants, and numerous traces of animal activity - of eating and burrowing – provide information about the flora and fauna. Fossils in marine deposits, such as mussels, snails and cephalopods tell us about life in the warm tropical seas of the time. [Taken from the geoparc's website].
Starting from the visitors centre Alden / Aldino the Geopath runs through the gorge. Notice boards at interesting places inform the visitor aubout the various rock strata, the many valuable finds - carbonised plants and trees. It leads you to an old vulcano funnel. The given coordinates are the ones of a place called "the sea breaks in". Until here you have seen the most spectactular part of the gorge. From here you can either return to the visitors centre or enlarge the tour to the end of the gorge called "Gorz", which is highliy recommended to visit, but not necessary for logging this cache.
